Most Common Tasks When Building Your Site

Things you'll do frequently in setting up your website are:

  - defining, editing "menus" and their "menu items" (navigation tabs at top)
  - creating "pages" and linking them to each other and to the menu items
  - creating, editing "blocks" -- items in the sidebars

You'll probably want to bookmark those for fast access since the Drupal navigation is a bit tedious.

For pages that will be linked directly from the navigation menus, you can do that all at once from the Create Page -- there is a section below called "Menu".  Otherwise, you have create a page, then copy the link, then make the menu item and link it into navigation and attach to the saved link.  (Unfortunately, once you've linked a page to the menus, you can only modify that attachment from the Edit Menu page and not any longer from Edit Page.

The easiest way to upload files is "attach" them to a "page".  Once they are uploaded, you can get their URL and use it in other places.  You do not have to make the page with the uploads accessible to others, so you can make one page of your site your document upload page if they are accessed from many places anyway, but otherwise just attach them with the page you will access them from.  For example, we attach the newsletters to the newsletter page.

When "weighting" sub Menu Items, to make it easier to add items later, spread the values out -- say making their numbers two or three apart. ("heavier" weights go lower; the range is -9 to +9, so if you have 4 items, you might put the top one at -8, the next at -4, then 0, 4 and 8 -- leaving room at the top and bottom and in-between.)
